An Old Virginia Christmas of 1864: The Christmas Before Freedom
12130 Booker T. Washington Highway
Hardy, Virginia 24101
Join us for this annual event with living history re-enactments of Christmas on the farm where Booker T. Washington was born and took his first breath of freedom.
It is the Christmas of 1864. The enslaved people on the plantation called it the Big Times. Nearly four years of Civil War has had a tremendous effect on all the inhabitants of the Burroughs Plantation. The Burroughs are struggling with a new realization that their way of life is changing; perhaps forever. The enslaved endure continuing hardship as well. But their feeling of optimism is becoming more apparent as they experience, “The Christmas Before Freedom Came!”
Light refreshments will be provided. Dress appropriately for program indoors and walking outdoors.
